Over the years we have come across a ton of new products. Some of them have been outstanding, truly revolutionary and a real plus in some form or another to the overall fishing experience. Unfortunately these were the exceptions instead of the rule. Most were re-inventions of the wheel. Another one is a better way of doing what we have been doing for a long time. Others were just plain junk. Poorly thought out or poorly designed or both.
I’m happy to report a recent discovery that definitely falls into that “outstanding” category. Dri-grip sunscreen is a product that I have used personally and that you will not likely find me offshore without.
To start with, anyone spending all day out in the sun, particularly on the water needs to be using a sunscreen. The question is which brand to use out of about a zillion available and why. Dri-grip, as well as most of the others provides the protection. That’s regulated by the government and there is not a lot to question in that area. The vehicle that provides the protection is an entirely different story and that’s where Dri-grip steps up. As the name would indicate it’s dry. It come out of the container as a cream not unlike many other brands but as you apply it the difference becomes obvious. It dries in seconds leaving virtually no residue or slickness. You really don’t even have to wipe your hands after applying it.
I have usually avoided re-applying screen while I was fishing because it was too much of a hassle getting the goo off my hands. Even after wiping or washing there was still some slickness I didn’t like. With Dri-grip I don’t have that problem. Another plus is that it doesn’t sting my eyes when things get sweaty.
The manufactures of Dri-grip have tested the effects of their screen on monofilament and flouro-carbon line and leaders and found no weakening or color change.
Common sense dictates that we use something to protect against skin cancer when we are exposed to the sun like we are when we’re fishing. For my money Dri-grip is the way to go. In a nutshell it provides the protection without slicking up your hands. It doesn’t sting you eyes and it won’t hurt your line. Finally, I’ve caught a bunch of fish while I was using it so I know there is nothing about it that turns fish off. Give it a shot; I’ll think you’ll like it.
